Two Cold Storage Facilities Inaugurated at Kabul Airport

Saratan 22: July 13, 2019 The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock (MAIL) inaugurated two fruit cold storage facilities at Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKIA) today. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Hashmatullah Ghafoori, deputy minister for irrigation and natural resources at MAIL, officials from the Ministry of Finance, Chamber of Commerce and Industries, and USAID officials. Hashmatullah Ghafoori, deputy minister for irrigation and natural resources at MAIL, addressing the opening ceremony said, “These cold storage facilities each has been built with the capacity of 30 metric tons, both of which is 60 metric tons. These cold storage facilities are designed to regulate the export of fresh fruits and prevent the fruit from getting rotten. After the creation of air corridors, an initiative of President Ashraf Ghani, Afghanistan’s air exports have increased.” Ghafoori added that the construction of both cold storage facilities have cost over 14 million AFN. Meanwhile General Director of Afghanistan Customs Department Ahmad Rashid Popal said that the construction of these cold storage facilities will allow Afghanistan to export its fresh fruits to world markets. He stressed that the best opportunity is facilitated for businessmen and investors in the country and the government is trying to provide more facilities for the exporters. Mr. Popal added that Afghanistan exported 64 billion AFN worth goods last year, but the figure has increased by 25 percent in the first six months of this year. He emphasized that the government is trying to increase the exports by 50 percent during this year. Deputy CEO of Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries Mr. Shafiqullah Atayee said that one of most important export items of Afghanistan is fresh fruits and vegetables. The storage facilities have been built by the Ministry of Agriculture in cooperation with USAID.
